Sidekick: The Musical

SCENE FOUR

(Curtain Opens) (Lights Up on Town Square. We should see passage of time; people

are wearing Rocket Diva T-shirts and gear. As the song ends, the Cat Burglar enters.

Rocket Diva chases her down and subdues her.)

20 - Song – “Rocket Diva” (3:30)

April – There was a time in our town, when Hoodlum’s ruled the street,

They’d come right up to rob us, and push us off our feet.

Albert – Bad guys and bank robbers, Super Villains too,

They thought no one could stop them, since Justiceman was through.

April – How they were mistaken, when with a flash she came,

The criminals were shaken, they didn’t know her name.

Amber - With super speed and power, she put an end to crime,

And never did she ask us even for a single dime!

(Chorus 1 - Townspeople)

Rocket Diva you’re our Hero,

We know you won’t let us down!

With your strength and super power,

We’re safe when you are around!

We pledge allegiance to our Hero,

None greater is to be found!

As our favorite Super Hero,

It’s Rocket Diva we Crown!

(With Video Pictures) Laura – I grew up in this town, with Becky at my side,

Best friends for forever, we always would confide.

She was always there for every Birthday Celebration,

Together at the playground, or Family Vacation.

Often we’d sleep over, at each other’s house,

Staying up late talking, then quiet as a mouse,

We’d share our dreams and secrets, of what we hoped to do,

We would pray and ask God to make all our dreams come true!

(Chorus 2 - Laura)

Something’s changed in my friend Becky,

And now she’s never around!

Kind and sweet and caring Becky,

Is gone and cannot be found!

I’m not sure if my friend Becky,

Will ever come back around!

Rocket Diva’s in the forefront,

And Becky’s in the background!

Sidekick: The Musical 27

(Chorus 3- Toby)

I don’t know what’s going on here,

Why Becky’s never around!

We all had such fun together,

Now things have turned upside-down!

Laura seems so sad and lonely,

Her smile’s replaced with a frown.

I sure hope they work it out soon,

Before things come crashing down.

(Chorus 1,2 & 3 Together)

ROCKET DIVA- Well, Cat Burglar, looks like this robbery has turned into a cat-astrophe

for you. Now you get to take a long cat nap on a new kitty litter down at the pound.

CAT BURGLAR- Rocket Diva, please! No more puns! I'm going cat-atonic!

ROCKET DIVA- Chief Scott, haul this kitty away and declaw her!

CHIEF SCOTT- You got it, Rocket Diva. Come on, Cat Burglar.

(Chief Scott exits with the Cat Burglar.)

APRIL- Rocket Girl, you saved us again.

ROCKET DIVA- Uh uh, Mayor. It’s Rocket Diva now. Get it straight.

APRIL- My apologies, Rocket Diva. How could I forget?

ROCKET DIVA- Maybe you wouldn’t forget if you started each day with Rocket Diva’s

Tartar Control Toothpaste, and, Rocket Diva’s “Give Me Fresh Breath Or Give Me

Gingivitis” Mouthwash.

EUNICE- Good grief. Another Rocket Diva product?

ROCKET DIVA- Of course, so my good friends, you citizens, can fight cavities like I

fight crime.

ALBERT- I know my kids love it.

ROCKET DIVA- I’m glad to hear it, sir.

APRIL- We’re just glad to have you, Rocket Diva.

Everyone starts leaving the stage slowly, except Laura and Toby.

AMBER- Rocket Diva, will you sign this T-Shirt? It’s for my daughter, she’s a big fan!

ROCKET DIVA- Absolutely. Tell her Rocket Diva loves her.

AMBER- Oh, I will.

EUNICE- Rocket Diva, don’t forget the University is hosting a dinner in your honor next

week.

ROCKET DIVA- I wouldn’t miss it Dean… not unless crime is afoot.

Everyone exits except Laura and Toby, who walk up to Rocket Diva. Toby is nervous

and giddy.

ROCKET DIVA- Hello, Citizens. What can I do for you?

LAURA- (sighs, annoyed) My friend here is a big fan. He’d like you to sign an autograph

for him.

ROCKET DIVA- Why, I’d be honored, Toby.

TOBY- She… she knows my name? I don’t believe it!

LAURA- Of course she knows your name. You know who this is.

TOBY- Yeah, she’s Rocket Diva!

ROCKET DIVA- That’s right.

LAURA- Rocket Diva, huh? Guess you’re not a girl any more.

ROCKET DIVA- No, my friend. I’m moving up in the world.

LAURA- And leaving your friends behind.

ROCKET DIVA- What do you mean?

LAURA- I mean it’s been a long time since we’ve gotten to hang out with our friend

Becky.

TOBY- You know, you’re right. I haven’t seen Becky in a long while. Where is she?

LAURA- I don’t know, Toby. I don’t know.

Sidekick: The Musical 29

ROCKET DIVA- Look, it’s a lot of hard work and sacrifice being a hero.

LAURA- Yeah, I bet it’s real hard work. Speaking at community dinners, attending

awards shows with boy bands, attending movie premieres, being on the Today Show.

TOBY- I’m waiting for her to host Saturday Night Live.

ROCKET DIVA- First episode of the new season!

TOBY- All right!

LAURA- Another night we won’t be seeing our friend.

ROCKET DIVA- Listen to you. I can’t believe you’d be so selfish.

LAURA- And I can’t believe how much you changed. What happened to the girl who got

her powers from God?

ROCKET DIVA- I’m still here.

LAURA- Yeah? So are the friends who were there when she was nothing. Too bad she

forgot about them.

(Laura) You, you, you, you! (Rocket Diva) Me, me, me!

(Laura) You, you, you! (Rocket Diva) Me, me me!

(Murray enters, listening to the end of the song. Laura and Toby exit after the song.

Murray walks up to Rocket Diva.)

MURRAY- Hey, super star. How goes it?

ROCKET DIVA- I’m upset, Murray. I think my best friends are mad at me.

MURRAY- That’s the way it goes sometimes. The old friends get jealous and can’t deal

with the fame.

ROCKET DIVA- So what do I do?

MURRAY- Why make new friends, of course. And you’ll have plenty of opportunity next

week, when we have a star-studded gala right here in Big City to unveil your new comic

book series.

ROCKET DIVA- Seriously?

MURRAY- I wouldn’t joke about comics, Diva.

ROCKET DIVA- Thank you, Murray. That does make me feel better.

MURRAY- That’s my girl. Don’t forget, autograph signings and photos at the mall

tonight.

ROCKET DIVA- I’ll be there.

Murray exits.

ROCKET DIVA- Murray’s right. They’re jealous. You haven’t changed. Not for the

worse, anyway. Things are looking up, and only getting better.

22 – Lightening Strike & Angelic Music (Archangel enters.)

ROCKET DIVA- What are you doing here?

Laura) You, you, you, you, you!

(Rocket Diva) Me, me, me, me, me!

(Toby) I’m just so confused!

Sidekick: The Musical 32

ARCHANGEL- Becky, you have forgotten everything. Your friends, your past, but

especially your God.

ROCKET DIVA- That’s not true! I’m using the gifts God gave me more than even my

uncle did!

ARCHANGEL- And you’ve forsaken the God who gave you those powers. Therefore,

God is taking all your powers from you.

ROCKET DIVA- He wouldn’t.

ARCHANGEL- I’m sorry. The decision has been made on high.

The Archangel exits.

ROCKET DIVA- You can’t do that to me! I’m your best crime fighter! What if I said I was

sorry? Hello? Hello!!

Rocket Diva freezes on stage at center. Murray enters, stage left, on his cell phone.

MURRAY- She’s doing great, Sidney. Sales are up, marketing’s in over-drive. Rocket

Diva is on her way to the top. The comic will be a smash!

MEDUSA- (off stage) I’m sure it will, and I can’t wait to be present at the big unveiling.

MURRAY- Really? You’re coming to Big City yourself? Why?

Medusa walks on stage, on a cell phone.

MEDUSA- Rocket Diva was my idea to begin with. I’m proud of you, and my little starlet,

and I thought I would come into town to meet her.

MURRAY- She’s going to be thrilled. Can I tell her?

MEDUSA- No, no. I want this to be a big surprise.

MURRAY- She’s going to be thrilled, Sid. I can’t wait to see the look on her face.

MEDUSA- Yes. Neither can I.

Medusa laughs evilly as the lights fade to black and music swells. (Curtain Closes)
